Overview
Did you know that the glass you use in your windows can help your home be more energy efficient? Just by using Pilkington energiKareTM in your windows not only will you be saving energy and money on your heating bills, you'll also be doing your bit for the environment.
NEW - The Pilkington energiKareTM range
The expanded family of Pilkington energiKareTM products lets you get all your energy saving requirements from one source.
From new homes to older traditional buildings, you can now provide better energy ratings in a wide range of different properties.
Benefits
- improves the energy efficiency of your home.
- reduces the amount of energy you use.
- saves you money on your heating bills.
- is part of the Energy Saving Recommended scheme.
- is more effective than single or standard double glazing.
- is the only product that offers you the reassurance of Pilkington quality and that has the endorsement of the Energy Saving Trust.
How it Works
Pilkington energiKareTM is different to standard double glazing as it works in two ways. It reduces the amount of heat lost through your windows and it also allows more heat (energy) from the sun in through the window. This effect is known as solar gain and as it comes from the sun it's free of charge.
Pilkington energiKareTM is made up of two special types of glass, Pilkington K GlassTM, the UK's best selling low emissivity glass which stops heat escaping and Pilkington OptiwhiteTM, a special ‘extra clear' glass which allows more solar heat in through the windows.
What's more, windows containing Pilkington energiKareTM can achieve the EST's Energy Saving Recommended status. Once incorporated in suitable framing material it will normally achieve a minimum BFRC Window Energy Rating of C and can be improved to B or A by the addition of Argon gas filling or warm edge spacer bar technology. Pilkington energiKareTM Insulating Glass Units are manufactured by approved licensed IGU processors then fabricated and sold through approved registered window companies across the country.
Installing Pilkington energiKareTM will help reduce your household's energy usage and CO2 emissions. As part of a Government initiative, British Gas is working with Pilkington supporting energy saving products.
Pilkington K (Low E) Glass:
Pilkington K Glass has been established for more than 15 years making it the trusted solution for meeting Building Regulations concerning energy efficiency. Pilkington K Glass or equivalent Low E Glass is supplied as standard with all our windows and doors.
Pilkington K Glass usually forms the inner pane of an Insulating Glass Unit (IGU).
The coating reflects heat back into the room whilst also letting in free heat from the sun known as passive solar gain.
Pilkington K Glass helps windows to achieve high Window Energy Ratings to demonstrate compliance with energy saving Building Regulations Part L.
Benefits
- Recognised by the Energy Saving Trust as a significantly effective measure
for achieving energy efficiency hence savings on fuel bills - Ideal for conservatories - helps to keep an unheated conservatory
comfortable for a greater part of the year than ordinary double glazing allowing you to make the most of your conservatory all year round - Helps to achieve high Window Energy Ratings when combined in a suitable framing system
- Easily helps to meet and exceed the requirements of Building Regulations concerning energy efficiency
- Can be toughened or laminated for safety and greater security.
- Can be combined with other Pilkington products such as Pilkington Activ or Pilkington Activ Blue for self-cleaning and solar control
How it Works
The glass in your windows absorbs heat then radiates it again on the colder, outside, surface. Pilkington K Glass has a so-called low emissivity coating which is positioned on surface 3 (counting from the outside) of the Insulating Glass Unit (IGU).
The low emissivity coating is a poor radiator of heat. So the heat absorbed by the coated glass does not travel across the air gap to the outer pane and the cold outside world. Instead the coating reflects the heat back into the room.
Windows incorporating Pilkington K Glass allow heat from the sun through and keep heat inside, making it easier and more cost effective to keep buildings warm.

Pilkington Activ Self-Cleaning Glass:
The unique dual-action of the Pilkington Activ coating uses the forces of nature to
help keep the glass free from organic dirt, giving you not only the practical benefit of less cleaning, but also clearer, better-looking windows.
